The yoga method is designed to promote physical health and longevity, and, when mastered, can be performed in three minutes in the morning and evening, said Shankar Balasubramanian, the workshop organizer and a student from India in WCU’s master’s degree program in business administration.
The method was developed by the Siddhas of South India and based on the teachings of the Yogiraj Vethathiri Maharishi of SKY Yoga of India. The workshops at WCU will be taught by senior SKY Yoga professors from India who are touring the United States. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing and to bring a blanket or yoga mat.
“I know Kayak Kalpa Yoga has contributed to my heath and wellness, and I wanted to share this knowledge with other students, staff and faculty,” said Balasubramanian. “I wanted to do something to benefit others – to have a positive influence. A person who learns about health and wellness at a young age benefits later in life.”
Balasubramanian was awarded a mini-grant from the university’s wellness program to help with travel and publicity expenses.
“What’s attractive about this program is that learning about this wellness technique also will be a cultural experience,” said Karrie Joseph, director of WCU’s wellness program.
Students can apply for grants of up to $300 from the wellness program for projects that help cultivate an environment that encourages individual wellness and nurtures a vibrant and just community.
