Biography:
I recently joined the faculty at Western Carolina University as an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. My responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses associated with neurogenic speech and langauge disorders and anatomy and physiology associated with speech, language, hearing, and swallowing. Having specialized in adult neurogenic language disorders, I also facilitate an Aphasia Support and Treatment Group in Asheville once a week.
Before joining the faculty at Western, I utilized every aspect of my speech-language pathology training working in various settings, including private practice, school districts, and several skilled nursing facilities. This vast clinical experience has given me greater insights into educating students to become expert clinicians regardless of the setting they choose.
My primary research interest is aphasia, an acquired language disorder affecting an individual’s ability to understand and use language following brain injury. One project currently being developed will investigate the role of cognitive impairment, specifically attention, in aphasia, and the impact of attentional impairments on treatment outcome. Other research plans include investigations of large group therapy and strategies to increase participation among group members.
Apart from teaching, supervising student clinicians, and conducting research, I am also working to establish several community-based projects to increase awareness of stroke and dementia in older adult populations. These groups will serve to educate persons in Western Carolina about the signs and symptoms of stroke and dementia, and resources available to them if needed.
On a more personal note, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Rion, and our two cats, Thomas and Madison. I am an avid fan of Alabama football (Roll Tide!), love to cook, and am always looking for new music to add to my collection.
