Computer Labs
The Asheville Graduate Center and WCU provide a computer laboratory in Karpen Hall 036.  The laboratory equipment includes 20 Gateway E-Series XP computers linked to the Internet, with access to resources located on the main campus in Cullowhee.  This lab is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Your student ID card provides access to this lab as well as seven other computer labs on the UNCA campus. Those labs are located in:
Robinson Hall 006 and 223
Rhoades Hall 105, 141, and 142
Karpen Hall 037 and 316
Owen Hall 221 and 228
Carmichael 242
Zageir Hall 126.

The hours for all labs may vary since classes and workshops preempt open lab hours. RBH 006, however, is open:
Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Friday, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Saturday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Sunday, noon - 11 p.m.
The lab is staffed by attendants.

Exact schedules are posted on the doors of each lab and in the WCU-Asheville office. The computers are equipped with the Deep Freeze program, which deletes new programs and files saved when the computer is re-booted.

Student Accounts
All Western students have a personal account on the central VAX (Virtual Address Extension) system that gives the student electronic mail, text-based Internet access, use of a variety of programming languages and statistical programs, and a place to publish personal web pages. The VMS (Virtual Memory System) can be accessed via workstations and terminals on the campus network, through the Internet, or by dial-up modem access.

Email
Your e-mail address is your username@wcu.edu, e.g., DJ12345@wcu.edu.  You can also access your e-mail address by conducting a search for your name in the WCU Student Directory.  To access the Student Directory, click the link for WCU People found on Western's homepage (Quick Links). Please note, the first part of your WCU e-mail address (e.g., DJ12345) is your username. Your password is your student ID number (social security number). You must then change the password to something new when you access the system the first time. You may use letters or numbers in your password, but no spaces or dashes. There are two ways to reset your password: (1) Use a web browser such as Netscape or Explorer to visit alf.wcu.edu/vmsacct and follow the directions to change your password or (2) Click the "start" icon on your computer. Click "run", type in "telnet mail.wcu.edu" then click "OK". At the Username prompt, type your student ID (without dashes) and press <enter>. You'll be prompted for a new password and verification (type the same new password again). After settting your new password, type "LO" then press <enter>.

Accessing VMS
Your account is on the WCU VMS computer named XON (formerly ACK). If you dial in by modem (see directions below), you will automatically connect to XON. If you use Telnet from a microcomputer, use the name xon.wcu.edu (IP number 152.30.1.2).  You will be prompted to enter your Username and Password. The Password will not show on the screen for security reasons. Once you are logged in, a system $-prompt will be displayed. To log out of your account enter the command LO at the $-prompt.

Webmail
Your Western e-mail account can be accessed from any computer with a connection to the Internet by going to the Webmail Internet site.  Simply go to http://webmail.wcu.edu:88/ and enter your username and password.  From there you can view your e-mail messages, compose and send messages, and store numbers and e-mail addresses in an address book.
