What are the effects of this law on me?
- With the DMCA it is illegal to access copyrighted works that are protected by technological measures (passwords, encryption, etc.). Read about the American Library Association (ALA) Anti-Circumvention Rule
- It regulates the use of copyrighted material for distance education. Read about the American Library Association's (ALA) article Distance Education and the TEACH Act
- It changed the way libraries can reproduce for preservation purposes.
- It changed the way libraries offer Internet access. The Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) was established to safeguard libraries and library users.
Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act
The Copyright Term Extension. This act became Public Law (P.L.) 105-298 on October 27, 1998.
What are the effects of this law on me?
With the enactment of the Copyright Term Extension Act in 1998, the term of protection for copyrighted works created after January 1, 1978 is for the author's life plus 70 years. Look at the Chart of Works in the Public Domain. This is an easy to use chart that tells you when a work passes into the public domain.
The TEACH Toolkit: an Online Resource for Understanding Copyright and Distance Education
Provides a summary and the text of The Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization Act (TEACH Act, Public Law 105-304). The site provides the full text of the law.
What are the effects of this law on me?
Regulates the transmissions of performances and displays of copyrighted materials as they are used in distance education/online classes.

American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), BMI and SESAC Under these licenses copyright of musical attractions are covered.
Musical attractions include: concerts, shows, recitals, dances and other similar performances.
