How to Find an Article if You Have a Topic
If you need general information, begin with an encyclopedia, like the Encyclopedia of Communication and Information and Britannica.
Browse the CQ Researcher Online, Communication & Mass Media Complete and Academic Search Premier. You can search these databases by topic.
How to Find an Article if You Have the Name of the Journal
- Type the title of the journal in the Library Catalog search box.
- Select “Periodical Title” from the scroll down menu.
- Check the dates to make sure the library subscribes to the journal in paper or online.
- If the subscription is online, click on the link and search within the publication.
How to Find a Print Journal in the Library
- Type the title of the journal in the Library Catalog search box.
- Select “Periodical Title” from the scroll down menu.
- Check the record to find out the location. Most of the bound periodicals and current periodicals are located in the first floor of the library.
- Periodicals that show “G Floor” in the location are located in the ground floor of the library.
How to Search a Database
- Once you have selected a database, enter keywords that you wish to search for into the search box and click on Search.
- If possible, use the “Advanced” search option and use the limiters (select peer-review journals, dates, periodicals etc.).
- A list of titles will appear. If you get no results, make sure your words are spelled correctly, or try alternative words or phrases.
- Full text articles in either HTML or PDF formats can be viewed online. All full text articles can be printed, e-mailed, or saved to a disk. In the database you are using look for links called e-mail, print or save. From most databases, you can also save the article citation to RefWorks.
- If the full text article is not available in that database you will see
icon. Click to see if the article is available in a different database or in another format (paper, microfilm, etc…). - If you are not able to find the full text of the article, then you can request it though interlibrary loan.
