The Kudzu Players will present two one-act comedic plays by James McLure, directed and acted by Western Carolina University faculty and students, from Thursday, Aug. 14, through Sunday, Aug. 17, at Niggli Theatre on the WCU campus.

“Laundry and Bourbon” and “Lone Star” will show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $7 for the general public and $5 for students, military personnel and individuals older than 60. The production includes adult themes and language and is recommended for mature audiences.

The companion plays, set in 1974 in small-town Texas, center on the character of Roy, a young newlywed recently returned from Vietnam. In “Laundry and Bourbon,” three women, including Roy’s wife, spend the afternoon consuming liquor and front-porch gossip. In “Lone Star,” set later that night, the menfolk down beer as Roy’s world unravels.

“Laundry and Bourbon” stars WCU theater students Sarah Lipham, Dayna Damron and Christina DeSoto and is directed by Steve Carlisle, associate dean of the Honors College. “Lone Star” stars Mark Hudson and Timothy Stoeckle, both theater students, and Clark Howerton, a WCU theater graduate. James Manning, a communication professor, will direct.

The Kudzu Players is a Sylva-based community theater company using WCU facilities while it builds a permanent space.
